School Bus Dilemma

At the start of the school year, I was very hesitant about putting my little baby on a school bus.  But after listening to my friends and thinking about how many children ride the bus everyday, I decided to be brave and let my little one stretch her wings.  From day one, our bus driver was very impersonal and angry looking.  No matter how many times us mom's pleasantly said hi or thank you to her, she would just continue to frown and not speak to us.   I, however, still let my daughter ride, because bad attitude doesn't equal dangerous driving.  Then as the days moved on, we noticed her driving getting faster and faster.  I kept telling myself that it was all a matter of perspective.  I wasn't on the bus, so it just looked like it was going faster.  So, I continued to let my baby ride the bus.

Then last week, the kids at my daughter's stop got off the bus with frowns on their faces and tears in their eyes.  We immediately asked what was wrong, loud enough for the driver to hear, but she just closed the door and sped off.  Our kids told us that the 5th grade boys in the back of the bus were goofing off.  So to solve the problem, the bus driver threatened them. If they didn't sit down and behave, she would speed up and the slam on her brakes so that they would fall.  Well, they didn't listen and she followed through with her threat.  As a result, all the kids on the bus went flying forward into the seat in front of them.  One of the first graders at our bus stop even had a large red welt under his eye from where his face his the seat.  Many of the kids complained that they were hurt and the driver told them not to worry about it, their moms could get them an ice pack at home.

Of course, all the parents were furious, and called or emailed the school immediately.  When the driver was confronted about the issue, she openly admitted to it.   And would you care to guess what they did after that?   They let her continue her bus route.  Really?!?!   Does my child's safety mean nothing???    After we learned the school could do nothing about it, many have written letters or called the director of transportation.  They're response is always the same.  It is under investigation.  When asked, what are they investigating, they say they can't talk about it.  And to make matters worse, this lady has done the same thing in the past and has also been in an accident with a bus full of children.  So in the mean time, everyone has pulled their kids off the bus.  I can't really put into words how I feel about this situation, but I am very disappointed in the school system.  If a teacher was even suspected of endangering a child, they would be suspended immediately.  Why aren't the same standards applied to bus drivers?  What are your thought about bus safety?  Grab a latte, put up your feet, and join the discussion!

Vapur The Anti-Bottle Review

Let me introduce you to my NEW gym companion.   Readers, meet the Vapur Anti-Bottle.  Vapur, meet my lovely readers.    The Vapur Anti-Bottle is a water bottle like you've never seen before.  It is reusable, foldable, and freezable.  This convenient water bottle is dishwasher safe and BPA-free.  It comes with its own carabineer, so you can clip it to your bag and go.  When you are done, refill it, or roll it up and stow it away.

For those of you who know me, you know that I am not germ friendly.  Therefore, each day when I head to the gym, I have to pack my own water.  I don't think I've used a water fountain since elementary school.  We all know how bad plastic water bottles are for our environment, but they are so convenient, that we often use them anyway.  The Vapur Anti-Bottle, is so easy to use and clean that you won't be tempted to going back to waste your money on the plastic bottles.   The bottle itself is also made from recycled material and shipped flat in order to help the environment even more.  The Vapur Anti-bottle is available in a variety of colors - green, purple, pink, smoke, and the new orange.

*Capacity: 16 oz (473 ml)

*Ultra-durable BPA-Free polymer

*Stands when full - rolls, folds or flattens when empty

*Carabiner attached for easy carry

*Writable text area for personalization

*Dishwasher safe (top rack)

*Freeze it, use it as an ice pack, and drink it as it thaws.

Buy it:  Buy your own Vapur Anti-Bottle for only $8.95

Open Discussion: Flu Shot

My children have received the flu shot every year since they were born and thankfully, they have never had the flu.  I know that some parents don't bother with the flu shot and most of the time their kids don't get sick either.  I think in my friend circle, we are split down the middle with who always gets shots and who never gets shots.   I know that I get the shots out of fear of my children suffering for a week with the flu.  In my opinion, the flu shot has been proven safe and my kids have never had a negative side effects to it.   So for our family, it works. It is officially flu season over here on the East Coast!  It is the season of germs, missed school, and flu shots. Although it is only the beginning of flu season, many children have already been affected by the virus this year.  My baby nephew, who lives in Maryland, had to go to the hospital last week because the flu had hit him so hard.  It is so hard to watch our kids struggle being sick with just a cold, but the flu is downright scary.  The flu progresses differently for different people, but everyone is at risk of high fever, pneumonia, and even death.  What are your opinions on the flu shot?  Does your family get it?  Why or Why not?

Recipe Corner: Iced Pumpkin Cookies

Now that the stores are fully stocked with pumpkin, it is time to start the baking season!!!  If you love pumpkin bread, you are going to love these cookies.  And although the recipe below is only the basic, feel free to add anything you love.  My kids love added chocolate chips or even dried cherries.  I know many people like nuts, but my hubby is allergic so we try not to bake with too many nuts! :)  Do you have a favorite pumpkin recipe?  Want to share it on Between the Lines?  Just shoot me an email, and I'll get it up for everyone to share! Kidorable Review and Giveaway

“In 1997, Kidorable sprung from the minds, hearts and efficiency apartment of Liping and Jonathan Domsky. They proclaimed, "The world needs someone to create children's apparel and accessories that are both functional and fun. We can do that."”   And they did just that.  Kidorable is a fun company that sells umbrellas, raincoats, rain boots, backpacks, towels, scarves, and much more!  All of their items are designed in fun themes for both boys and girls.

We were recently sent this cute butterfly umbrella to review.   The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.  Just a few days after receiving it, the remnants of a tropical storm passed through our area.  It rained hard for about two days straight!   My daughter was so happy to use her new umbrella and I loved that she stayed dry!

The umbrella is a perfect fit for both my girls.  It is not too small that their backs are getting wet, but it is not too big that they can’t keep it up over their heads.    If butterflies aren’t for your kids, check out all their other great themes.  Our favorites were the fairies, mermaids, lotus flower, and lady bug.  But we have a house full of girls.  If you have some handsome young men in your house, they may love the frog, dinosaur, fire truck, or pirates.

For those of you with a baby or more sophisticated taste, Kidorable has a product line for you too.  Don’t miss their baby line or their English Rose line, inspired by Madonna’s children’s book.

Buy it: Buy your own Kidorable items today!  Prices range from around $11.50 - $45.00.
Win it:  Thanks to the generous people from Kidorable, one lucky reader of Between the Lines will win their choice of an umbrella.  Simply visit Kidorable and leave me a comment about your favorite product.  This is a mandatory entry.  All other entries will be deleted if this is not completed.  Please leave your email address so that I can contact you if you win!
