Movie Review: Avatar

Avatar, James Cameron’s futuristic Pocahontas tale, has captivated its audience since opening night. Like most of Cameron’s films, Avatar had us sitting in our seats for nearly three hours. However, the visual effects and the creation of a stunning new world kept us mesmerized until the very end. Avatar invites us to experience the movies like never before. Although the 3-D glasses had given me a headache by the end of the film, the experience was well worth it.

***Warning Spoiler Alert***

***Summary Below***

Good Question Kara. I hadn’t originally posted any detail because I didn’t want to spoil the movie for anyone. However, I will explain how Avatar resembles the Pocahontas tale (and I mean the Disney version, not the historical version). Both stories begin with the dominant (in their opinion) culture making plans to take over the native savages. The humans in Avatar and the English settlers in Pocahontas both feel the best way to get what they want is to attempt to learn more about the savages. The humans, or sky people, in Avatar are searching for riches just as the English settlers were searching for gold. Unable to find these things on their own, both groups attempt to gain the trust of the natives. In Avatar, they create the dreamwalkers . In Pocahontas the task is left to John Smith. Both stories end with the main character falling in love with the princess of the Natives. And of course along the way, they learn how we are all connected to nature.

I really liked this movie too. The glasses gave me a headache at first but I adjusted after 10 or 20 minutes. I really liked how the 3D effects in Avatar don't jump out at you like you'd expect from this kind of movie, instead they add depth.
