A Failed Challenge

I’m not one to usually quit a challenge, especially one I gave to myself, but I’m afraid that I have to bow out of my Chris Brogan challenge. I made the mistake of skimming the topic list and only really reading the top ten. I have just gone to get a new batch of topics from his site and realized that I was way over my head. The majority of the remaining topics focus on media marketing, social media, and working in a corporate business. I am unfamiliar with all of those topics and therefore my posts would be all research and no personal experience. So for the few of you who were following the challenge, I apologize for quitting. I just didn’t want to waste either of our times. After writing on yesterday’s topic, I realized how much I missed writing on the randomness of the day. I am excited to be able to get back to posting on topics that are important to me. Thanks for understanding! I hope you all have a fabulous weekend!

Chris Brogan Challenge : How I Use My Website

As I was sitting in a lonely hotel room, waiting for my husband to get out of work, I was searching the web for new ideas for my blog. During my search, I came across a guy named Chris Brogan, author of Social Media 101 and coauthor of Trust Agents. Mr. Brogan had made a list of 100 blog topics that he hoped “I” would write about. Many of his ideas fit me perfectly, while others I’m not really sure what they are. In all my boredom, I decided to challenge myself to write about all 100 of his topics. This won’t be easy, since some of the topics are a big question mark to me, but a little research never hurt anyone. Figuring in the fact that I don’t write real posts on the weekend, this challenge will be 100% successful if I complete it in 20 weeks. So let’s begin…Day Nineteen – Topic Nineteen (still writing)!

I use my blog in a variety of ways. I use it to reflect the type of person I am. I love to bake and cook, so I share recipes with all of you. I love trivia games, puzzles, and movies, so I share daily trivia questions with you. And I love trying new products (and winning them), so I share reviews and giveaways with you. The one thing that I feel is missing on my blog is personal posts. When I first started writing on my blog, I would include posts on things I was feeling or things that I had discovered or learned. However, since I started this Chris Brogan Challenge, I feel that I have stopped writing about things that matter to me. Sure I’ve learned new things about social media, but I missed opportunities to talk about other topics on my mind. Unfortunately, I just don’t have time in the day to write an additional post. I guess this was a good topic for me to stop and reflect on my writing. I will have to think about this more today and let you know what I decide tomorrow. In the meantime, for my loyal readers who have made it the bottom of this post, I have a little surprise. The first two followers that email me their favorite type of makeup, gets 15 bonus entries into the Orglamix giveaway. (betweenthelines-kam@hotmail.com . What do you use your website for? Chris Brogan Challenge : Ten Guilty Pleasures

Figuring in the fact that I don’t write real posts on the weekend, this challenge will be 100% successful if I complete it in 20 weeks. So let’s begin…Day Eighteen – Topic Eighteen (still on target)!

Everyone has a few things in life that they enjoy, perhaps more than they let on. My guilty pleasures may be a bit embarrassing, but at least they aren’t bad for me. So let’s get started before I change my mind about sharing!

1. Twilight. Must I say more? I know, I know. It is a series written for teenagers and young adults. And as long as I’m being honest, I haven’t been a teenager in a long time. Either way, I enjoy reading this fun and romantic series by Stephenie Meyer.

2. Cookies. Baked goods are my weakness, and cookies are on the top of my list.

3. Blogging. We all know how addicting blogging can be. Once you start, you just can’t stop.

4. Dance Dance Revolution. I know everyone thinks I look ridiculous, but it’s so fun, I don’t care!

5. Rock Band. I know there target audience is teenage boys, but I can rock out with the best of them!

6. Twizzlers. Everywhere I look on TV, someone is eating Twizzlers. And every time I see it, I NEED a Twizzler.

7. Cherry Ameretto Sour. Sweet and refreshing.

8. Disney World. I love going with the family to Disney World. I get so excited and feel like a kid again.

9. Long Hot Showers. Not only do I love them, but it is the only time during the entire day that I have to myself.

10. iCarly. I know most of you won’t even know what this is (hopefully), but I actually enjoy watching this show with my girls. Embarrassing, I know.

Now that I’ve shared with you, what are a few of your guilty pleasures? Grab a latte, put up your feet, and join the discussion.

Chris Brogan Challenge : Book Shopping- Buy These Books

So let’s begin…Day Seventeen – Topic Seventeen(trying to stay afloat)!

With so many great books out there, how do you choose what to read? I usually take recommendations from friends and family to see which books are worth my time. Being a full time mom, wife, cook, maid, blogger, and chauffeur doesn’t leave me a much time to read as I would like. So with the time I do have, I want to make sure the books aren’t just good, but great! My books choices are very diverse. The majority of what I read falls into the Christian Women’s Literature category. But on the other end of the spectrum, I’m really enjoying the books full of the supernatural. For those of you looking for something new to read that is inspirational, heartwarming, and captivating, you must try a book by Karen Kingsbury, Dee Henderson, or Terri Blackstock. These amazing Christian authors tell unforgettable stories that you won’t be able to put down. If you decide to try Karen Kingsbury, I suggest you start with the book Redemption. Redemption is the first book of my most favorite series. I guarantee you will love it. If you decide to try Dee Henderson, I suggest you start with The Negotiator. This is the first book of my second favorite series! And if you decide to try Terri Blackstock, I suggest you start with the Cape Refuge series.

Now for those of you who love the supernatural, you have probably already read the Twilight series. If you have somehow missed these books, they are definitely worth a read. Just keep in mind that the characters are in high school and it is a young adult book. For those who loved Twilight and are looking for new books that fall into the same genre, you will love the House of Night series by P.C and Kristen Cast. This series has a different take on vampires that you will love. Another series that I’m enjoying is the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. Just a heads up, if you have a teenager who loves Twilight and is looking for other vampire books, this is not the series for her. The Sookie Stackhouse books are much more mature and I would not recommend them for anyone under 18. So what books do you recommend we buy? Grab a latte, put up your feet, and join the discussion!

Chris Brogan Challenge : Books I Want to Write

Figuring in the fact that I don’t write real posts on the weekend, this challenge will be 100% successful if I complete it in 20 weeks. So let’s begin…Day Sixteen – Topic Sixteen(still going)!

Although I’ve reached my goal of successfully writing a book, there are definitely more books that I want to write. My completed manuscript is historical fiction for young kids, grades 2-5. It is intended to be a series, so of course I am hopeful to write some more in the series. I’ve already started the second book, but I’m taking my time completing it because I’ve yet to find representation for the first. Of course if I didn’t have my blog to write for, two kids to take care of, and a household to run, I’d probably have finished the second one already. But all in good time. Besides this children’s series, I have many ideas floating around in my head. The majority of books I read tend to fall in the Christian Women’s Fiction category. So I would love to try my hand in writing a book that fits that category. I’ve started a book in this genre (only 15 pages done), but I may have to start over because I was trying my hand at writing in first person and it sure is difficult. But I guess, it is good to try new things. I have another work in progress that I’m really excited about. It has been a difficult road put it together because I’ve been working with my husband on it. My husband does not enjoy reading books or writing anything, but he came to me one day with a great story and he asked me to write it. It is a hard collaboration because he works all the time and when he is home, helping create this awesome story is not top priority (which I’m glad about). One day we will finish it (Maybe in 20 years) and I can’t wait to share it with everyone. What types of books would you like to write? Grab a latte, put up your feet, and join the discussion!

This topic doesn’t really work because my mother is not on Facebook. But at my age, I think it would be great if she was. I use Facebook to share little updates and photos with friends in my life. I have nothing to hide from my mother and would welcome her to sign up(you reading mom? ). I have a feeling this blog topic was aimed at younger folks with something to hide!  Is your mother on Facebook? Is this a good or a bad thing? Chris Brogan Challenge : What I Spend Money On

Figuring in the fact that I don’t write real posts on the weekend, this challenge will be 100% successful if I complete it in 20 weeks. So let’s begin…Day Fourteen – Topic Fourteen(still here)!

Everyone has their own weakness when it comes to spending money. Whether you spend it on shoes, purses, or going out to eat, it is something that makes you happy and you don’t mind spending the extra money. Unlike many women my age, I’m not really into shopping. When I do go shopping, it is usually for groceries or for my kids. You would think that with my lack of expenses, we would be able to save bundles of dough. However, my weakness is much more expensive than a new pair of shoes. I love family vacations! Family vacations are not only fun, but they are a necessity in my house. My wonderful husband works very hard and rarely takes a day off (including weekends). Family vacations are needed in order to force him to relax and have some fun. Every year, we travel to Disney World for one week and it is the best week of the year. It is a week where we get Daddy’s full attention and don’t have to worry about work calling to distract him from the family fun. Disney World isn’t cheap, but it is worth it for all the great memories and fun times! How do you spend your extra money? Grab a latte, put up your feet, and join the discussion!

Chris Brogan Challenge : Empower Your Best Customers

As I was sitting in a lonely hotel room, waiting for my husband to get out of work, I was searching the web for new ideas for my blog. So let’s begin…Day Thirteen – Topic Thirteen(trying to keep up)!

This topic obviously doesn’t fit me at all. For those of you who know me, you know I am a stay at home mom, and therefore, no customers to empower (unless you count my kids, you I do live and breathe to serve them). However, if I twist it up a bit, and pretend my blog is business, then maybe I could work on a few things. Every blog has a few completely devoted readers. They are the readers who stop by everyday just to see what you’ve posted. They may or may not comment each day, but you know they read what you wrote. Now that my blog has taken a new direction and I’m hosting giveaways, I think I have a way to help my devoted readers. A few days before or after I post a giveaway, I could sneak a code word into a post. The first few folks that email me the code will receive bonus entries into the upcoming giveaway. This added bonus would be a nice way of rewarding my loyal readers. Well, no point in waiting for the next post…The first two people to email me the word Staycee, will receive 15 bonus entries into the Guy and Eva Giveaway. Chris Brogan Challenge : How Schools Could Use Social Media

As I was sitting in a lonely hotel room, waiting for my husband to get out of work, I was searching the web for new ideas for my blog. Figuring in the fact that I don’t write real posts on the weekend, this challenge will be 100% successful if I complete it in 20 weeks. So let’s begin…Day Twelve – Topic Twelve(still here)!

There are many ways that high schools and colleges could take advantage of using Social Media. I think schools could use Twitter to update or remind students about important events coming up. Imagine a big away game approaching. You definitely want to make sure that you have fans in the crowd. Send out a tweet to the entire student body reminding them of when and where the big game is going to be held. Now imagine a fundraiser, dance, or sporting event happening at the school. Why now send out a tweet with a code that is good for a discount? We all know that we are more likely to buy something if it’s on sale.

I believe Facebook would be good for schools to hold class discussions. If each teacher had a class facebook page, the student could join and be there to help each others with questions, bounce ideas off one another, or just remind someone what the homework is. They could add a discussion section with a question each week that encourages the students to think outside the box and interact with one another. This medium would be good for those that are on the shyer side and don’t feel comfortable speaking up in class. How do you think school could use Social Media? Chris Brogan Challenge : My Children Will Do it Differently

Figuring in the fact that I don’t write real posts on the weekend, this challenge will be 100% successful if I complete it in 20 weeks. So let’s begin…Day Eleven – Topic Eleven(still going)!

This is a very open-ended topic because I believe that my children will do many, if not most things, differently when they grow up. If we talk about the technology world, there is no telling what kind of gadgets and gizmos our children will be using when they are our age. Technology changes on a daily basis and it’s hard to keep up. Although cell phones and iPods are commonplace today, we would never have envisioned them growing up. I remember when I was young, the cordless phone was such a fascinating invention. Of course it didn’t hurt that Zac Morris, from Saved By the Bell, had one (a portable one I might add)! Who know what our kids will have. Perhaps video phones in their sun glasses? I also remember growing up and listening to my parent’s record. They always sounded better than the tapes we had, but they weren’t as portable. My kids don’t even know what a record is and I have a feeling my grandkids won’t know what a CD is! It is hard to imagine what they will come up with after iPods and MP3 players, but I’m sure it will be smaller and better. I imagine my kids having a small hidden ear piece that hold over 100G of music. There is no way to tell how technology will change our children’s lives, but if it is anything like Back to Future, I hope I’m around to try a hover board!

Chris Brogan Challenge : Somebody Has to Say It

This topic could go many different ways depending on who is writing it. Those of you who know me well, know that I’m not a very confrontational person. So when “Somebody Has to Say It”, it usually isn’t me. So, let’s do this post a little differently. I will start with some things that just have to be said and then you join in by commenting below. Maybe between all of us, we can say it all!

1. John Roethlisberger should not be getting preferential treatment.

2. Tiger Woods is a disgrace to the American Man.

3. Our Soldiers need to be remembered. Don’t let them think we forgot that they are still fighting hard.

Chris Brogan Challenge : How I Find Blogging Ideas

As I was sitting in a lonely hotel room, waiting for my husband to get out of work, I was searching the web for new ideas for my blog. During my search, I came across a guy named Chris Brogan, author of Social Media 101 and coauthor of Trust Agents. Mr. Brogan had made a list of 100 blog topics that he hoped “I” would write about. Figuring in the fact that I don’t write real posts on the weekend, this challenge will be 100% successful if I complete it in 20 weeks. So let’s begin…Day Nine – Topic Nine(still on track)!

I believe finding things to blog about is a blogger’s hardest challenge. My first thought when I begin a post is, Who cares? Will my readers be interested? Will this topic discourage them from reading other posts? I eventually decided that if it is a topic that interests me, then there are probably a few people out there that care about the subject too. I write my blog to express who I am and the things I am interested in. So typically (before I started this challenge), I found blogging ideas from my everyday life. Most often, my posts stemmed from conversations that I had with my friends. We discuss so many diverse topics (usually with diverse opinions), that I was never low on topic ideas. I also would get topic ideas from news events and various observations throughout my day. Where do you find your blogging ideas? Grab a latte, put up your feet, and join the discussion!

Chris Brogan Challenge : Ways to Save a Bad Time at a Conference

As I was sitting in a lonely hotel room, waiting for my husband to get out of work, I was searching the web for new ideas for my blog. During my search, I came across a guy named Chris Brogan, author of Social Media 101 and coauthor of Trust Agents. Mr. Brogan had made a list of 100 blog topics that he hoped “I” would write about. Figuring in the fact that I don’t write real posts on the weekend, this challenge will be 100% successful if I complete it in 20 weeks. So let’s begin…Day Eight – Topic Eight(I need a familiar topic)!

I can honestly say that I have never been to a corporate conference before, but I have been to a few teaching conferences run by the county. When you think of going to a work conference, what is the first thing that pops into your mind? BORING! Well how can you prevent this boredom from setting in? My fellow teachers and I always tried to arrive early to a conference. This gave us time to chat amongst ourselves and also time to meet new people. Usually at teaching conferences, those from the same school get separated into different groups. So it is good to meet new people as a whole before going your separate ways. Having people to communicate with during a conference is so important. This saves you from getting so bored that you start to miss out on important information. So stop thinking of your work conferences as a boring mandatory event, but rather think of it as an opportunity to meet many nice and fascinating people. What do you do to keep yourself from having a bad time at a conference? Grab a latte, put up your feet, and join the discussion!

Chris Brogan Challenge : How Best to Comment on a Corporate Blog

As I was sitting in a lonely hotel room, waiting for my husband to get out of work, I was searching the web for new ideas for my blog. During my search, I came across a guy named Chris Brogan, author of Social Media 101 and coauthor of Trust Agents. Mr. Brogan had made a list of 100 blog topics that he hoped “I” would write about. Figuring in the fact that I don’t write real posts on the weekend, this challenge will be 100% successful if I complete it in 20 weeks. So let’s begin…Day Seven – Topic seven(keeping on)!

I believe the best way to comment on a Corporate Blog is to be professional, courteous, and honestly. We all know that there are millions of people out in the world who think differently than we do. We are individuals and therefore have opinions of our own. I do not feel that this gives us the right to bash, belittle, or act unkindly to others. After reading many comments on various corporate blogs, I saw a pattern of disrespectfulness. Perhaps the individuals don’t understand that there are actual people with feelings on the other end of these blogs. There are always way to voice your opinion without be disrespectful. I think this is also important in the personal blogging world. I have seen so many wonderful bloggers get hurt because of malicious comments. We need to remember that these blogs are written by actual people who are allowed their own voice. How do you think is the best way to comment on a corporate or personal blog? Chris Brogan Challenge : How Flickr Did it Right

Figuring in the fact that I don’t write real posts on the weekend, this challenge will be 100% successful if I complete it in 20 weeks. So let’s begin…Day Six – Topic six(Still at it)!

The first thing I had to ask when this topic came up was, what is Flickr? Again, I am embarrassed for not knowing something so basic, but at the same time I’m excited to be learning about so many new online resources. So it turns out that Flickr is a website like Photobucket or PicassaWeb. It allows its users to upload and share photos, videos, and images. Using Flickr is free if you keep your uploading to under 100MB. If you need more space, they charge $25 per year for unlimited storage. So what would I do with it? I think Flickr would be a great resource in creating online family albums. After you upload them, you can even edit or crop the individual pictures. When your album is complete you can easily send the link to everyone you know and they can view your pictures all around the world. Flickr can also be used by those of in the blogging world to host our photos. Although I’ve used Photobucket in the past, I’m sure Flickr would work just as well. So, I know I didn’t really answer Chris Brogan’s question, but I’ll need to have time to test it out before I can say what they did right. Which photo hosting website do you prefer? Chris Brogan Challenge : Technology That Empowers Me

So let’s begin…Day Five – Topic Five(So far, so good)!

Society today has nearly immersed itself in technology. It is a normal everyday part of our lives. But does that technology empower you or have power over you? The answer to this question will be different for everyone and you may answer it differently depending on your mood of the day. For example, I think the “fancy” phones that have internet capabilities are amazing and very convenient. It can be very beneficial to have this great resource at your fingertips. However, it is very inconvenient when your husband’s work is aware of his phone’s capabilities and he is expected to answer emails even when out to dinner with the family.

I also think it depends on your age. How amazing is it that there are now navigation systems such as TomToms? This technology will keep us from ever getting lost or having to stop for directions. Unless of course it breaks while we are on a trip. Now you may discover that this technology that had empowered us to travel without a worry, may have taken power away from you. Those of us in the 30-90 year old range, will know that we can turn back to our trusty old maps, but will the younger generations even know how to read a map? Why learn to use a map to navigate when technology does it for us?

There are many arguments for and against technology, but on the whole I think the progress we have made is good. I think the key is to learn to use technology as a tool and not depend on it too heavily. I personally would be lost without my computer. I love to write and blog, but owning a computer for the last 20 years has taken away from my hand’s stamina. I can only write on paper for about 5 minutes before my fingers hurt. I know it is sad, but at least I know if computers disappear, I can still write. I hope that teachers don’t forget the importance of this simple skill. With more and more laptops entering classrooms, I fear writing will become obsolete to teach. Do you think technology empowers us or has the power over us? Chris Brogan Challenge : A Community I Love

So let’s begin…Day Four – Topic Four(keeping up)!

Community is a perfect topic for this week’s celebration. Every year, our community celebrates the Apple Blossoms, by throwing a week long festival. The community comes together for dances, luncheons, a marathon, a carnival, a circus, and of course parades. There are so many activities that I don’t even know all of them yet. I’m fairly new to this area, but each year I learn of new activities that are mainly family oriented. I believe that this festival is not only a good way to bring the community together, but it is also a great place for local businesses and artists to make people aware of their products. This year’s Apple Blossom festival was kicked off with a wine tasting festival on the downtown walking mall. Different vineyards from around the area were there to showcase their wine. And to my kids’ delight, there was homemade kettle corn! And as if it couldn’t get any better, this year’s Grand Marshall is Val Kilmer. I imagine there will be more ladies buying front row seats to the main parade.

I am also proud of how much our community gives back. There are many various charitable groups that make a big difference right here in our own backyard. I have been fortunate enough to participate with several of these groups. Last year I was a part of an all woman’s build with Habitat for Humanity. With the help of some trusty contractors, we were able to build a home for a single mom working hard to give her daughter a better life. For the last few years, I was also able to help the Salvations Army soup kitchen my donating and cooking meals for the homeless. Currently, my friends and I are working to raise money for cancer research with Relay for Life. Although our group is small, the community as a whole has already raised about $73,000! Talk about making a difference! What do you love about your community? Grab a latte, put up your feet, and join the discussion!

Chris Brogan Challenge : Should My Town Use Social Media?

As I was sitting in a lonely hotel room, waiting for my husband to get out of work, I was searching the web for new ideas for my blog. During my search, I came across a guy named Chris Brogan, author of Social Media 101 and coauthor of Trust Agents. Mr. Brogan had made a list of 100 blog topics that he hoped “I” would write about. Figuring in the fact that I don’t write real posts on the weekend, this challenge will be 100% successful if I complete it in 20 weeks. So let’s begin…Day Three – Topic Three (still on track)!

I am embarrassed to admit this, but before writing a response to this topic, I had to do a double check on what social media was. I am new to the computer and blogging world and I wanted to make sure my idea of social media was indeed accurate. Luckily, I was correct in assuming that sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace are all examples of social media. I’m sure there are hundreds more, but I’ll just stick with the ones I’ve heard of. So back to the question at hand, I definitely think it would be valuable for a town to use social media. Where large corporate businesses have the benefit of mass advertisements on TV, radio, and newspaper, local businesses could use free social media sites to promote themselves. These businesses could announce sales or coupons through twitter and Facebook. We all know that sales bring out more customers, but if no one knows about them, they don’t help. On sites, such as Twitter and Facebook, word of mouth could bring many new followers/customers. Having a Facebook fan page for your business, can also help spread the word that your business actually exists. When one person becomes a fan, all their friends on Facebook are alerted. Then if one of their friends becomes a fan, their friends would be alerted. This would begin a domino effect that would bring in more and more people.

Social media could also be helpful in spreading the word of various events that are happening around your town. In the fall, families could be made aware of various pumpkin patches or hay rides. In the winter, those following the town’s Facebook or twitter page could know the best sledding hills or where to visit Santa. In the spring, one quick check would alert you to the various egg hunts going on around your town. And in the summer, you would know about all the camps and recreational activities happening in your area. What other ways would social media be beneficial to your town? Chris Brogan Challenge : Ways I Embrace My Audience

As a blogger, you always want to find a way to connect to your audience. At the beginning of your blogging career, it can be a little touch and go. But if you truly listen to your readers’ lovely comments, you can begin to see a pattern of what types of posts they enjoy. When I first started blogging I tried a variety of things. Some ideas that I thought were fun (i.e. Quote of the Day), didn’t get much response. Since my readers weren’t enjoying them, I cut them out. I did discover that my fabulous readers love recipes and trivia, so these two topics are posted daily. On top of that, I also try to have a daily main post that discusses topics on my mind or that attempts to share information. I try to embrace everyone by posing a question at the end of my post and by inviting them in to join the discussion. I also think that it very important to answer comments and return the favor. If my fantastic followers are taking time to read my blog and respond with love, suggestions, or critiques, I think that it is only fair that I do the same. Thankfully, they always have great posts waiting for me to read. By reading other blogs, I not only get to learn more about my audience, but I’m also starting to make online friendships with many wonderful women. What do you do to embrace your audience? Chris Brogan Challenge : How I use Facebook

As I was sitting in a lonely hotel room, waiting for my husband to get out of work, I was searching the web for new ideas for my blog. Figuring in the fact that I don’t write real posts on the weekend, this challenge will be 100% successful if I complete it in 20 weeks. So let’s begin…Day One – Topic One!

When I first joined Facebook last year, I knew very little about it. From what friends had told me, it was a social network that allowed you to connect with your friends, share pictures, and chat online. I had no idea that you could play games, share videos, and create or follow fan pages. Although I would love to say I do something fabulous with Facebook, like market my own Etsy shop or promote my new best -selling novel, I really only use it to stay connected with my friends. I know that sounds rather dull and boring, but I have reconnected with so many friends of the past that it is actually pretty exciting. When my family left Germany (Military family) in 1992, I never imagined that I’d see or hear from any of my grade school friends again. But with the help of Facebook, and a very dedicated Gymnastics coach, I have reconnected with nearly all my close friends from Germany. It is fun to reminisce, but it is also great to see how everyone has changed, what career path they’ve taken, and all the beautiful babies they have brought into this world. Facebook has also helped me reconnect with high school friends that I had lost touch with during college and it helps keep the day interesting with my current friend’s daily status updates.
