Open Discussion: Bulk Buying

Buying in bulk is very popular these days. From BJ’s, Sam’s Club, and COSTCO, people are flocking in by the 1000’s! Are these stores worth their membership fee? Does buying in bulk really save you money and time?

I do think some foods or items are going to save me money when buying in bulk, but going into places like Sams or Costco has the tendency to cause me to spend more money on unneeded stuff. I guess I fall into their trap of the "great deals" of things I really don't need but who can pass up 100 reams of paper for $.25 a ream? That's just a silly example but really, I don't need the biggest bottle of shampoo or lotion or ketchup.

I tried buying bulk at Costco and found that I was spending more money! Surprise. I guess these places are great if you can stay focused, which I couldn't. I ended up with a lot of stuff I didn't need (t-shirts, dvds, and cute clothing that ended up in the back of my closet). Maybe it wasn't so cute in the end.

The other thing I discovered was that I often bought too much food when I shopped there. It eventually went bad or I got tired of it. I quickly found that I was spending an additional $120 more a month by buying bulk.
